About the Course

Energy Procurement course aims to inform participants about the basic procurement processes for electricity and gas in the UK.

It will describe how the electricity and gas industries are structured and how this impacts on the prices customers pay. It will explain the main drivers on energy pricing in the UK and how electricity and gas tariffs are structured. It will also explain the types of energy contracts that are available and the simple procurement processes that can be used by energy buyers.

The course also includes information about how third party intermediaries work, how to get the best out of them, reveals how they get paid and how to minimise their costs.

Importance of Energy Procurement

Procurement of energy can be complex, time consuming and very pressurised for professionals who are unfamiliar with energy markets, how they operate and how suppliers offer contracts. Procurement of energy should be managed appropriately as it is one of the organisational activities that has a direct impact on the cost of energy to the organisation.

Why to join this course?

The LEC training programme is the Energy Managers Association's initiative that equips individuals with the skills and knowledge required to reduce their personal energy consumption within the workplace and at home. There are four different stages of LEC training:

  • LEC 1 - RAISING INDIVIDUALS AWARENESS ABOUT ENERGY USE

  • LEC 3 - ENERGY MANAGEMENT IN PRACTICE (Recognised Energy Manager status)
  • LEC 4 - MANAGING AN ENERGY MANAGEMENT TEAM AND ENERGY USAGE IN THE WORKPLACE (Recognised Energy Manager status) - under development

This taught course uses a variety of teaching/learning methods and strategies:

  • Lectures and workshop: These provide the basic foundation by presenting relevant knowledge, theories and techniques.
  • Billing examples and exercises: These provide examples of how bills actually look, how contracts are formed using attendees own bills as examples.
  • Peer interaction, especially from group exercises and discussions: These provide periods where participants can discuss the information presented and sharing experiences from their own organisations.
  • Post-course paper: Course assessment, based on the course content, assesses the understanding of the taught material.
